Safety Planning
Safety planning helps victims of domestic violence develop tools in advance of potentially dangerous situations. The suggestions listed
here may or may not make sense for your set of circumstances.

SAFETY FIRST
• During an explosive incident
go to an area that has an exit, not a bathroom or kitchen.
• Stay in a room with a phone.
• Know your escape route.
• Have a packed
bag ready if you have to leave suddenly.
• Devise a code word or signal so friends or neighbors know if you need the police.
• Know
where you're going. Explore options with a shelter. Have a safe place to stay if you leave.
• Find someone you trust.
• Tell schools
and childcare.
• Review your safety plan.
IF YOU NEED TO LEAVE, TAKE WITH YOU...
• Marriage and Driver's licenses
• Birth certificates
- yours and family's
• Money, checkbooks, jewelry, credit cards, ATM cards, car title
• Social Security card, work permit, green card,
passport, visa
• Divorce, custody papers and restraining order
• Insurance papers and medical records
• Lease, rental agreement and/or
house deed
• School and health records
• Keys - house, car, office
• Medications, glasses, hearing aids, etc. needed by you and your
family
• Personal items - important phone numbers and addresses, pictures, toys
