The South Asian community in the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex consists of over 80,000 people and the community is constantly growing. It is also a diverse religious and ethnic population. It is known fact that a South Asian victim of domestic violence and abuse faces many additional challenges as compared to an average American domestic violence victim. Also, in the case of South Asian victims the abusers can be other family members besides an intimate partner. These barriers sometimes keep them in an abusive situation for long periods of time and also prevent them from seeking assistance from a mainstream organization.
CHETNA provides information and services to South Asians in the Dallas-Forth Worth and surrounding areas during times of crisis through peer support, counseling, community education and outreach. CHETNA has been set up to provide victim’s services in conjunction with existing resources and the mainstream agencies. We work with the domestic violence organizations in the Metroplex to reach out to the South Asian community and to make them aware of the wide variety of services available to them. We also network with other South Asian organizations within the state and the nation.
