- Volunteer Opportunities within CHETNA Ý
CHETNA is proud to be an all volunteer-based organization that helps victims of domestic abuse. You can be part of it too!

Being a CHETNA volunteer can be a rewarding experience for many reasons, including the following:
 
  • You will get a chance to share your expertise and time with people who truly need it
  • You will have the opportunity to develop wonderful friendships with like-minded, interesting people whom you may not otherwise have a chance to know
  • A few hours of your time each month can make a significant impact on someone's life
  • You will receive information about our activities, projects and community events
  • We also encourage you to join some of our social programs such as CHETNA Talkie, a movie and discussion Sunday afternoon every quarter. This is another chance to socialize with board members and other volunteers

- General Requirements for ALL Volunteers Ý

If you are interested in volunteering for CHETNA, the following training is required:
  • You need to attend a volunteer training - either our own training or at other DV agencies. These trainings are all FREE OF CHARGE - Please watch out for upcoming sessions
  • You will need to fill out:
    • An application form
    • A confidentiality form
    • A transportation signup form (if you want to help with transport)

    • Volunteers are expected to have strict adherence to CHETNA rules and confidentiality policies
    • All volunteers who will have face-to-face contact with clients are required to undergo a screening interview and criminal background check

- How You Can Help Ý
CHETNA volunteers have the option to participate in any of the following areas:
    • COMMUNITY EDUCATOR /  OUTREACH VOLUNTEER Ý
      Raise awareness about DV, especially in the South Asian community and provide information to the public about CHETNA by assisting with information booths at events, programs, and festivals. This will include distributing our printed materials, engaging in discussion with attendees/visitors to let them be aware of our activities, looking for people who will be interested in getting involved with us. Educate the community on relevant topics including cultural awareness, immigration issues, services offered by CHETNA and local DV agencies.

      Qualifications:
      Participation in the Volunteer Orientation Training. Training will be provided on the issues of domestic violence/sexual assault, Asian family/community dynamics. Volunteers must have good communication skills and enjoy talking to people.

    • TRANSLATOR Ý
      Multilingual individuals with English and South Asian language skills are needed to provide interpretive services to our clients. Volunteers will assist CHETNA advocates in providing resources to clients. Interpretive services may be needed when working with doctors, lawyers, other service providers, schools, etc. Volunteers who are fluent in any South Asian language are welcome.

      Qualifications:
      Participation in the Volunteer Orientation Training. Volunteers must have good communication skills and enjoy talking to people.

    • FUNDRAISING / EVENTS VOLUNTEER Ý
      Volunteers are needed to assist with various projects involving fundraising and event planning. We are also looking for gracious community members to host social events as fundraisers.

      Qualifications:
      Volunteer must have good social, organizational and logistical skills, as well as connections to the South Asian community.

    • WEBSITE COMMITTEE VOLUNTEER Ý
      Help create graphics and multi-media materials for the website. Opportunities include developing, editing, and updating website material.

      Qualifications:
      Previous experience with web related maintenance, HTML, web design and web technologies preferred.

    • PEER ADVOCATE / ANSWERING THE PHONE LINE Ý
      Provide outreach and advocacy services to our clients. Volunteers will provide peer counseling, crisis intervention and overall support to survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault. Responsibilities include conducting intakes, referrals, case management, safety planning, and legal advocacy. Advocates must be sensitive to cultural diversity and immigration issues.

      Qualifications:
      Participation in CHETNA Volunteer Orientation and a 40-hour volunteer training conducted by one of the many DV organizations. All volunteers who will have face-to-face contact with clients are required to undergo a screening interview and criminal background check. Those interested in becoming an advocate must have volunteered with CHETNA consistently for 1 year and/or have 1 year or more of counseling experience. Participation in ongoing monthly meetings is required. Must have the ability to listen and communicate with diverse populations, manage stressful situations, and willingness to tackle a variety of problems. Advocates are expected to have strict adherence to agency rules and confidentiality policies.

    • TRANSPORTATION Ý
      Some of our clients need help with transportation from their homes to counseling or legal agencies and back. If you are interested, please fill out the transportation sign up form. Also a disclosure/liability form must be signed.

      Qualifications:
      Participation in the Volunteer Orientation Training. A current driver license and no criminal record. Must have the ability to listen and communicate with diverse populations, manage stressful situations, and willingness to tackle a variety of problems.

    • LEGAL ADVOCATES Ý
      Provide victims with legal resources on issues of domestic violence, family law, and/or immigration. Advocates also assist with accompaniment to court, attorney’s offices, and other legal agencies.

      Qualifications:
      Participation in the Volunteer Orientation Training and a 40-hour volunteer training conducted by one of the many DV organizations. Additional training as needed. All volunteers who will have face-to-face contact with clients are required to undergo a screening interview and criminal background check. Volunteers must have the ability to listen and communicate with diverse populations, manage stressful situations, and willingness to tackle a variety of problems. Advocates are expected to have strict adherence to agency rules and confidentiality policies. Participation in ongoing monthly meetings is required.

    • NEWSLETTER Ý
      Help once a month with the two newsletters (a public one and an internal one for volunteers), with finding and/or researching content, doing design/graphics and emailing to our target group.

      Qualifications:
      Participation in the Volunteer Orientation Training. Must keep in touch with the media and volunteer coordinator and keep informed with current events at CHETNA. Writing, graphic and design skills desired.

    • EVENT CALENDAR Ý
      Manage the calendar of events. Must obtain information from board members about CHETNA events and research outside events and mark the calendar in the current format. It will then be emailed every month to CHETNA members and also be available on the website.

      Qualifications:
      Volunteers must have good social, organizational and logistical skills, as well as connections to the South Asian community.

    • GENERAL ADMINSTRATIVE Ý
      Assist CHETNA with various administrative projects. Help CHETNA with copying, mailing, filing, organizing, updating databases and other office projects, as needed.

      Qualifications:
      Familiarity with standard office equipment, and an interest in helping the South Asian community. Participation in the Volunteer Orientation Training.

    • GRANT WRITING Ý
      Interest and experience in writing grants. Volunteers will work with the CHETNA team in getting information about various grants available at federal, state and local levels, finding out the deadline for each grant and helping to develop a master format for grants.

      Qualifications:
      Participation in the Volunteer Orientation Training. Good writing skills and knowledge about grant research especially concerning DV.

    • OTHER Ý
      Volunteers are also welcome in participating time to time in activities such as providing home-made meals for clients.
